Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for the “Fifth of May” celebrates an event meaningful for both the U.S. and Mexico. Cinco de Mayo celebrates “The Day of the Battle of Puebla,” when Mexicans in this region defeated the French and kept Napoleon III from builidng a stronghold in Mexico where he could supply confederate rebels. This in turn allowed the United States to build an army that could defeat the Confederates at Gettysburg, essentially ending the Civil War. Had Mexico not defeated the French in Puebla on May 5, 1862, France would have most certainly gone on to aid the South in the U.S. Civil War, and the United States’ destiny could have been very different. So both coutries celebrate the outcome of this important battle. No matter which side of the border you’re on, it’s a great day for all to enjoy and appreciate Mexican food!
